Lately at the Shepards

Todd has a few jobs going on for this month. Things are a little slow and he likes to stay busier, so he is hoping to drum up business by working on a marketing flier and new business cards. He has also been running on the treadmill and recently has ran the farthest that he has ever run 4.3 miles in 45 minutes.

This weekend I went to a conference in Houston with Renee. We had a very nice time and were foolish enough to think that we would come back rested. The motel was beautiful, beds were comfortable, the spa was amazing, food was incredible, weather oddly nice, and conference was enlightening. We left Friday morning at 7 and came back Sunday night at 8:30. Very, very nice weekend.

Mason started his new tot class and I am not sure it will be a good match for us. His old one was so much fun for him there were 4 to 5 other little kids his age and they did lots of fast paced activities. Because of my work schedule and the babysitters schedule we aren't able to go to that class this time. So, we switched. There are 3-4 younger kids in this class. The teacher wants him to sit on the mat quietly and wait his turn for her to ask him something or show him something. I'd prefer for him to be able to explore the room and visit with the other children. I want to use this time to let him fulfill his curiosity and play, dance, run, jump, build with blocks, paint, etc. I am confident that there is plenty of time for him to learn to sit quiet and wait (like in preschool or kindergarten). So we will go to one more day of this class and then we will switch. Please don't misunderstand me here. I want him to learn social rules and to be obedient, I am just not sure this is the time or the place.

Last week when the kids were sick there was one day that Avery just felt miserable and was crying a lot. Mason went over to her and kissed her on the head and said, "There Avery, all better. Don't cry baby." Anytime Mason gets hurt he asks us to kiss it. The other day he told me his butt hurt and said, "Butt hurt, kiss it Mommy." I politely declined.

Mason is using, please, thank you, and your welcome very diligently. I tell him that I love those good manners. He also has been reading a lot of his books lately. He will say words like he is reading them point out everything that he recognizes or knows on the page. When he is done he says, "Thee End"

Mason told Avery the other day, "Be careful Avery, don't fall. Don't break body." I thought this was sort of funny because I always tell him, "Be careful, or you'll break your body."

He has been earning money lately for doing a very good job. Lately, dinner has been taking about 45 minutes with much protest. Tonight he cleaned his plate without any fight and he earned a dollar. He was so happy. He said, "My money, not Mommy's money, not Daddy's money, Mason's money." He was so proud, so was I.

Avery is so strong. She is very sturdy and stands with no hands a lot the time. Her movements are very controlled and intentional.

She is falling to sleep by herself about 80% of the time, which is fantastic!!! We turn on her music, put her binki in, give her her bunny, and leave. She will cry out on and off and we go in and lay her down and put her binki back in and give her her bunny. Before long, voila sleeping baby! It is so funny that she sleeps better when we leave her door open. When Mason was a baby he didn't sleep as sound through noise so his door was always shut.

She is also really shrieking. I think that she is really starting to get that she has a voice. She usually does it when she is having fun or really happy, but sometimes she will be sitting there and she will just shriek. She really likes it when you throw her up in the air or spin her around.

Avery makes the cutest little face where she squishes her little noise up and and breathes in and out her nose really fast. You tell her, "do moochachas Avery" (this is a Mexican expression for this action per her babysitter) and she will do it, then she laughs. We get a kick out of this.

She loves to play with Mason's golf ball and will go through the toys to find it. If someone else has it she will climb up on them to get it.

I play with the kids a lot and we like to play "puppy". This game works well because Avery is crawling well now. Mason and I will crawl between her room and his and she will follow. The kids think that this is great, so do I. It is fun for all of us to be able to play something together.
